The landscape of Zimbabwean agriculture is shifting toward a high-value, export-oriented future, with Manicaland Province at the epicenter of this transformation. Following the recent Zimbabwe–China Horticulture Buyers Engagement, the province has solidified its status as a critical gateway to the vast Chinese market, buoyed by the impending implementation of a zero-tariff policy.
In a statement reflecting the province’s growing economic influence, Hon. Misheck Mugadza, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Manicaland, praised the proactive steps taken by local farmers. “I am encouraged by the strong progress being made by our farmers who are now securing direct export deals with Chinese buyers,” Mugadza noted, emphasizing that these milestones are a direct result of Manicaland’s strategic positioning.
A Hub of Agricultural Excellence
Manicaland is no longer just a producer; it is evolving into a sophisticated horticultural hub. The province already dominates the national output of:
- Macadamia Nuts
- Avocados
- Tea
However, the vision extends further. Driven by global demand and the lucrative Chinese trade window, farmers are diversifying into high-value crops such as blueberries, pecan nuts, and chillies.
Strengthening the Value Chain
To sustain this momentum, the government and private sector are prioritizing massive investments in the agricultural infrastructure. The focus remains on:
Logistics and Market Linkages: Streamlining the path from farm to fork.
This surge in productivity is a cornerstone of the Horticulture Recovery and Growth Plan, a national roadmap aimed at building a $1 billion industry by 2030. By creating an enabling environment for investment, Manicaland is not only unlocking global markets but is also ensuring that the benefits of devolution are felt through job creation and provincial prosperity.
Irrigation and Agro-processing: Moving beyond raw exports to value addition.
Cold Chain Systems: Ensuring perishables maintain international quality standards.
