Sad News: Liberation Hero Who Survived Chimoio Attack Dies at His Harare Home

Retired Brigadier General Mark Charles Chimwaza Passes AwayThe Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has been plunged into deep mourning following the untimely passing of one of its most decorated sons, Brigadier General (Retired) Mark Charles Chimwaza.

The veteran of the liberation struggle, known by his guerrilla name Cde Paddington Chafachaora, breathed his last on December 13, 2025, at his home in Kuwadzana, Harare.

A Hero’s Journey: From the Classroom to the FrontlineBorn on April 10, 1957, in Mutare, Chimwaza’s life was defined by duty.

At just 19, he abandoned his secondary education at St Mary’s Magdalene to join the ZANLA forces in Mozambique. His journey was one of survival and grit; he was at the infamous Chimoio Camp during the 1977 Rhodesian attacks, narrowly escaping the carnage to complete his training at Tembwe.

Military Excellence and ServiceAfter independence, Chimwaza’s rise within the ZNA was meteoric. Attesting as a Private in 1982, he quickly moved through the ranks, specializing in Field Artillery after training in Romania.

Throughout his career, he held several strategic positions, including:

* Platoon Commander at the Presidential Guards.

* Commanding Officer of the 21 Infantry Battalion.

* Staff Officer Grade 1 (Public Relations) at the ZDF Headquarters.

His commitment to “intellectual warfare” was equally impressive, as he held a Diploma in War and Strategic Studies alongside certificates in Agriculture and Education.The Nation MournsThe late General, who was 68, had been battling lung cancer.

He leaves behind a legacy of selfless service, having been awarded numerous medals, including the Liberation Medal and the Independence Medal.

Mourners are currently gathered at House Number 5373, Kuwadzana 7, Harare. The nation awaits final details on the burial of a man who spent his entire life guarding the sovereignty of Zimbabwe.
