The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has unequivocally rejected any recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity, reaffirming the African Union’s steadfast commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Somalia.
This strong stance, articulated with deep concern over recent developments, underscores the AU’s long-standing position rooted in the principles of its Constitutive Act.
Central to the AU’s position is the respect for the intangibility of borders inherited at independence, a principle affirmed by the 1964 decision of the Organization of African Unity.
The Chairperson explicitly stated that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and any initiative or action aimed at recognizing it as separate is contrary to these fundamental tenets.
The AU views any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity as a dangerous precedent with far-reaching implications for peace and stability across the entire continent.
The Chairperson reiterated the AU’s unwavering support for the Somali authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen State institutions, and advance inclusive governance. This commitment reflects the AU’s dedication to maintaining regional stability and upholding the established territorial integrity of its member states.
