NSSA Champions “Vision Zero” for Safer Workplaces in Zimbabwe

By Tendai Keith Guvamombe Harare, Zimbabwe – The National Social Security Authority (NSSA) is intensifying its drive for “Vision Zero” across all Zimbabwean workplaces, advocating for an environment free from work-related illnesses, injuries, or fatalities.

This critical message was delivered by Shepherd Muperi, NSSA’s Director of Social Security, during a media cocktail held in Harare on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Muperi, whose organization serves as the custodian of safety and health in the country, urged media practitioners to champion conversations that promote the adoption of the Vision Zero philosophy.

He emphasized that occupational safety and health is not merely a regulatory requirement but a fundamental human right that safeguards the very individuals who power the nation’s economy.”

The benefits of investing in occupational safety and health go beyond just compliance; they spill over to economic and social dividends,” Muperi stated.

He cited international studies demonstrating that every dollar invested in workplace safety yields over $2 in positive economic effects, highlighting how safe working conditions boost productivity, reduce absenteeism, and enhance morale.

As Zimbabwe strives towards becoming an empowered upper-middle-income society by 2030, Muperi stressed the imperative that industrial growth does not compromise workers’ health and safety.A cornerstone of NSSA’s mandate is the Accident Prevention and Workers Compensation Scheme, established in 1990.

This scheme acts as an insurance cover, protecting workers against employment injuries. Benefits include periodic payments for lost income, lump sum payments for disabilities, workers’ pensions for significant disabilities, coverage of medical expenses, and dependent benefits in cases of work-related fatalities.

These provisions ensure that workers and their families are cushioned against the financial and emotional fallout of occupational injuries and diseases.

Muperi appealed to the media to raise awareness about the scheme’s operations and its profound impact on Zimbabwean workers.

He also highlighted the Workers Compensation Rehabilitation Centre in Bulawayo, a specialized facility offering comprehensive rehabilitation services like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, vocational training, and psychosocial support.

This center, he noted, is a testament to NSSA’s commitment to holistic, human-centered care, aiming to restore independence and improve the quality of life for injured workers.NSSA’s proactive stance, articulated by Muperi, signals a robust commitment to fostering safer, healthier, and more dignified workplaces for all Zimbabweans.
