The ongoing legal cases surrounding Wilson Masokovere former manager of Destiny of Afrika Network (DANet) in Mutare have laid bare a concerning rise in “gutter journalism”. At the center of this media circus stands Maxwell Haitengeswi Nyika, a self-styled social media commentator whose biased, unvetted commentary on the Wilson Masokovere case demonstrates the vast divide between professional court reporting and rogue online blogging.
Crucial to understanding this narrative is dismantling the false myth surrounding Wilson Masokovere: he is not, and has never been, a housing project pioneer.
Reclaiming the Facts: Masokovere’s True Role
To label Wilson Masokovere a “pioneer” of DANet’s housing projects is a gross historical rewrite. Masokovere did not found or spearhead the housing initiatives in Manicaland.
- Recruitment, Not Creation: Masokovere was merely recruited into DANet as an employee by the organization’s actual founder, Rev Dr. Obedia Musindo. A person who lacks foundational knowledge of when and how housing schemes in Manicaland were established cannot lay claim to being a pioneer.
- A Departure from Core Principles: Between 2000 and 2009, DANet maintained a strict policy of appointing pastors with strong Christian backgrounds to lead operations. The inclusion of Masokovere—a non-believer who joined as an unknown operational hand—represented an operational misstep that diluted the faith-based principles of the organization.
- Lack of Organizational Footprint: Long before Masokovere’s name held any relevance, DANet had already established structured, impactful housing initiatives in Chinhoyi, Bindura, Harare, Chegutu, Kadoma, Masvingo, Zvishavane, Gweru, and Kariba. Furthermore, if Masokovere or his defenders claim he possesses a locus standi or registration deeds for the housing projects in Mutare, they have yet to produce a single official document to support it.
The Blunders of Gutter Journalism
Court reporting requires strict adherence to ethical standards, impartiality, and verified legal documentation. Maxwell Haitengeswi Nyika’s coverage fails on all counts, exposing his commentary as partisan blogging masquerading as journalism.
Nyika’s reporting lacks professional logic, demonstrated most clearly in his shifting stance on the judiciary. Early on, when High Court rulings went against Masokovere, Nyika launched hostile attacks against Justice Manzunzu, alleging favoritism toward DANet and demanding recusal. Yet, any time a procedural filing tilted in Masokovere’s favor, Nyika executed a sudden U-turn, praising the court.
To Nyika and his brand of commentary, a High Court judge is only competent if the verdict favors Masokovere. Anything else is decried as “judiciary capture.” This hypocrisy highlights the difference between a neutral court reporter and an online cheerleader for hire.
A genuine journalist seeking the truth would rigorously question Masokovere: Where are the official incorporation documents? Where is the paperwork proving independent ownership or pioneer status in DANet’s Mutare projects? Instead of interrogating these gaps, Nyika acts as an uncritical mouthpiece.
Bloggers Are Not Court Reporters
Citizen commentary plays a role in public discourse, but claiming the title of a professional journalist requires ethics, verification, and balance. Being a social media blogger does not automatically confer the qualifications of a court reporter.
The public deserves fact-based journalism, not narrative-spinning designed to protect an individual resisting lawful audits and court orders. Maxwell Haitengeswi Nyika’s performance in the Wilson Masokovere case serves as a clear warning of what happens when ethics are replaced by social media cheerleading.
