Tom Aspinall’s vacating of the UFC heavyweight title came after an 11-month odyssey to regain fight-worthy vision. Yet the inevitable disappointment of a fan base who has yearned for his rematch with Ciryl Gane does not come close to the frustration felt within the Aspinall camp, as several false dawns have emerged and disappeared on his way back to the Octagon.
After Uncrowned accompanied the now-former champion to undergo a double-eye surgery in February, there were multiple junctures where all signs pointed to a competitive return. Yet, Aspinall’s right eye has now deteriorated to the point of being “the same as day one,” according to those within the Atherton camp — one of multiple setbacks Aspinall has suffered over the past year. The mood within the team is now one of immense frustration, but also resigned acceptance to this new reality. The British heavyweight has spent all of 2026 seeking out the best eye specialists to aid him in his comeback. It is now those in the medical field who will not sign off on his ability to fight.
“I’ve had multiple surgeries, accidents and infections, and done everything possible to get back to competing,” Aspinall explained via Instagram on Monday.
“I had previously agreed to a fight date and was back sparring, feeling great and ready to compete when an accident caused further damage to my right eye. This means more time away from the sport, and right now, the timing of my return is unclear.”
Training is once again limited for Aspinall, who will have to holster his weapons to allow the healing process to take its course. The black spot that would not leave his field of vision before the February surgeries has returned, per sources, a constant reminder of Aspinall’s October 2025 meeting with Gane in which he suffered the double-eye gouge that has forced his yearlong absence from the sport.
