Ramaphosa’s Mic Muted At UNGA After Blasting Israel’s Actions in Gaza

South Africa’s Stand on Palestine Interrupted at UNGA

At the UN General Assembly, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s impassioned condemnation of Israel’s military actions in Gaza was abruptly interrupted, leading to widespread speculation about the cause of the technical “glitch” that muted his microphone.

The incident occurred as he was speaking at a high-level meeting on the two-state solution, a gathering Israel and the United States boycotted.

Ramaphosa’s speech was characteristically blunt, aligning with South Africa’s long-held position on the conflict. He did not hold back, labeling Israel’s actions as “genocide” and urging the international community to recognize the State of Palestine.

He called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages by Hamas, and the removal of all obstacles to a Palestinian state.

This strong stance is rooted in South Africa’s own history of fighting against apartheid, with many drawing parallels between the historical injustices faced by Black South Africans and the ongoing struggles of the Palestinian people.

The sudden muting of his microphone ignited a firestorm on social media, with many questioning whether the “technical issue” was a deliberate act to silence a critical voice.

The incident quickly became a symbol of the perceived double standards and power imbalances within the UN and global diplomacy. While UN officials cited technical difficulties, the timing of the interruption—during a powerful critique of a key Western ally—fueled a narrative of censorship.

This event highlights the increasing frustration of countries in the Global South with the existing international order. They argue that the UN’s system is rigged to protect the interests of powerful nations, often at the expense of those who are most vulnerable.

South Africa’s decision to take Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on charges of genocide further solidified its role as a leading voice for Palestinian rights.

The “mic mute” incident, regardless of its true cause, has amplified this message, underscoring the challenges faced by nations that dare to challenge the status quo on the world stage.
