Johannesburg Water Prepares for Rand Water Maintenance Impact

SA- Johannesburg Water customers and colleagues are advised of upcoming maintenance interventions on the Rand Water system, which will directly impact water supply to various parts of Johannesburg. Lynn Meyer, Senior Manager for Water Demand Management at Johannesburg Water, announced the details from the South Hills Water tower.

The first intervention is scheduled for tomorrow, June 3, 2025, on the Rand Water Palmiet system. This essential maintenance involves cleaning the Clipfarmate Bath Number One Reservoir and conducting a legally required structural assessment.

To facilitate this work, pumping from the Palmiet system will be reduced to 67% of its full capacity for a period of 10 hours.

The Palmiet system is a critical water source, supplying several key Johannesburg Water installations. These include the South Hills tower, the Lynxfield, Reinke’s, and Lachter reservoirs on the eastern side of the city. Furthermore, the entire Sandton system, encompassing its reservoirs and direct feeds, is supplied by the Palmiet system. Further north, the Midrand system, including the Steyn City and Tinswallow reservoirs, and various Midrand reservoirs, also receive water from the Palmiet system.

Johannesburg Water assures residents that this is not a complete shutdown of pumping but a reduction. The affected areas have sufficient storage capacity to buffer the 10-hour reduction in pumping, mitigating potential disruptions to supply during this vital maintenance period. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official Johannesburg Water channels for any further updates.
