Harare –The National Blood Service Zimbabwe (NBSZ) is urging citizens to embrace the spirit of selflessness and contribute to saving lives through blood donation. This year’s global theme, “Give blood, give hope: together we save lives,” resonates deeply with NBSZ’s ongoing efforts to ensure a sufficient and safe blood supply across the nation.
In a recent statement, NBSZ CEO Lucy Marowa emphasized Zimbabwe’s integral role within the global transfusion medicine community. “Every year on the 14th of June, we join the rest of the world in commemorating World Blood Donor Day,” she said.
“This day is really dedicated to thank our selfless men and women who give blood time and time again to save the lives of those that are in need in the various health institutions.”
Ms. Marowa highlighted the dual purpose of the occasion: to celebrate the heroic acts of blood donors and to raise awareness about the critical need for safe and adequate blood and blood products within Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
She further called upon governments and international health authorities to provide the necessary resources to ensure seamless health delivery, guaranteeing that patients in need receive timely blood transfusions.
The NBSZ is particularly focused on appreciating unpaid donors whose consistent contributions form the backbone of the nation’s blood supply. “We also want to make sure that the unpaid donors that are giving blood each and every time are appreciated and that these heroic acts that they are undertaking do not go to waste,” Marowa stated.
“Together we save life. So by giving blood, you are giving someone hope. And together we are actually saving lives,” she concluded, underscoring the profound impact of each blood donation. The NBSZ continues to work tirelessly to inspire more Zimbabweans to become regular blood donors, ensuring that no life is lost due to blood shortages.
