HARARE – A groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming waste management and promoting clean energy in the capital city was officially launched last week Friday with the unveiling of the Integrated Resource Recovery Centre (IRRC) in Tafara.
Spearheaded by the Zimbabwe Sunshine Group and supported by SIDA through UN-HABITAT, the project marks a significant stride in the #HarareSustainableCityInitiatives.
The event saw attendance from various key stakeholders, including Government, UN Agencies, Development Partners, Embassies, and Civic Society. Delivering remarks on behalf of Dr. Martin Rushwaya, Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, C. Maringa highlighted the project’s profound impact.

“This project provides better living conditions to the citizens of Harare by improving their access to sustainable waste, clean energy and promoting energy resource efficiency,” Maringa stated. “It actually demonstrates best practices for integrated sustainable waste management, which is one of the goals of Vision 2030.”
Maringa also lauded the Mabvuku community for their invaluable contributions, emphasizing their role as a pillar for the project’s long-term sustainability. He underscored Zimbabwe’s ambitious journey towards achieving zero waste, driven by innovative initiatives and campaigns championed by Environment Patron, Auxillia Mnangagwa.

These efforts are reshaping the nation’s approach to waste management, recycling, and environmental sustainability, from government-led programs to grassroots movements.
The Tafara IRRC is designed to align with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) by increasing recycling activities and facilities. It also contributes to the Zero Waste Movement’s commitment to community empowerment and a host of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, and 17.
Furthermore, the centre embodies the aspirations of Vision 2030 through its focus on clean energy, training, and psychosocial support, adopting an integrated societal development approach. This milestone was made possible through the continuous support of line Ministries, Local Authorities, and the Environmental Management Agency, underscoring a collective commitment to a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally resilient Harare.
