MDC-T Members to Convene for July 17 Meeting Following High Court Ruling

Members of the Movement for Democratic Change – Tsvangirai (MDC-T) are set to gather at Harvest House in Harare on Thursday, July 17, for an all-members meeting aimed at discussing the party’s future following a High Court ruling that nullified its December 2022 congress.

The ruling, delivered on February 28, 2025, by Justice Hapias Zhou, declared the congress convened by Douglas Mwonzora unconstitutional and instructed the party to hold a fresh, constitutionally compliant congress within six months.

Mwonzora, who had been serving as MDC-T president, was removed from his position as a result of the judgment. The court found that the congress did not meet the party’s constitutional requirements, including quorum and procedural transparency.

While Mwonzora has appealed the ruling, many within the party believe that if he wishes to continue in leadership, he should contest in a properly convened congress and win through a fair and democratic process. This sentiment has gained traction among members who view the upcoming meeting as a chance to restore legitimacy and unity.

Organizers of the July 17 meeting say the agenda will include:

  • Updates on legal and political developments
  • Presentation of a proposed agreement for member review
  • Discussion of a lawful path forward
  • Reaffirmation of the party’s commitment to constitutional principles

The meeting is open to all MDC-T members. With no formal structures currently in place, organizers stress that member participation is essential to validate any proposed reforms.

As MDC-T navigates this transitional period, the July 17 meeting is expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s next steps and reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy.
