Mutoko, Zimbabwe — The rural community of Mutoko, under Chief Charehwa, has received a massive economic boost with the official opening of the Chihera Leisure Centre, a sprawling new tourism development funded by Zimbabwean Diaspora investor, Choice Kanyongo.
The impressive facility, which includes a bar, swimming pool, sunk braai area, conference facility, butchery, and future plans for 20 guest rooms, was officially commissioned on behalf of the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, by the Ministry’s Chief Director, Ms. Tarirai Musonza.
The Minister applauded the project as a “shining example of the Rural Tourism Cluster,” highlighting its immense potential to stimulate local economies and preserve cultural heritage, directly advancing national development priorities under Vision 2030.
The Power of “Nyika Inovakwa neVene Vayo”Hon. Rwodzi emphasized that projects like Chihera Leisure Centre perfectly embody President Mnangagwa’s mantra, “Nyika Inovakwa neVene Vayo” (A Country is Built by its Owners).
By reinvesting in her rural home, Ms. Kanyongo is helping to transform rural areas into vibrant and competitive Tourism hubs.
The Minister noted that Diaspora-led initiatives are vital in strengthening Zimbabwe’s rapidly growing global tourism profile, a reputation recently affirmed by Forbes Magazine naming Zimbabwe the World’s Number One Destination for 2025.
The Chihera Leisure Centre is a practical demonstration of how local investment can significantly elevate the Rural Tourism product and enhance tourist experiences across the country.
The Ministry strongly encouraged more Zimbabweans abroad to follow this example by supporting sustainable tourism ventures that generate local employment and create wealth right where it’s needed most.
The facility is expected to become a cornerstone for tourism in Mashonaland East, offering comprehensive hospitality services while showcasing the beauty and potential of Zimbabwe’s rural heartland.
