The African Union (AU) and Germany have reaffirmed their commitment to a strong strategic partnership aimed at accelerating Africa’s development priorities.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Youssouf Mahmoud Ali, received Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, H.E. Ms. Reem Alabali-Radovan, today for a crucial meeting that underscored the need for enhanced cooperation.
Chairperson Youssouf welcomed the recent German Chancellor’s initiative—announced at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg—to deepen relations with Africa.
He noted that this approach aligns well with existing AU frameworks and holds significant potential for advancing mutually beneficial projects.
A key point of discussion was climate governance and the clean-energy transition.
The Chairperson commended Germany’s global leadership in renewable energy and encouraged the intensified sharing of knowledge and technology with African countries to support their energy goals.
H.E. Youssouf specifically called for sustained German and broader EU support for Ethiopia as it prepares to host the UN Climate Change Conference, COP32, in 2027, highlighting Africa’s increasing leadership role on the world stage regarding climate action.
The leaders also exchanged views on peace and security challenges across the continent, focusing on the situations in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and the Sahel region.
Both stressed that effective and sustainable peace can only be achieved through solutions that are African-led and nationally or regionally owned.
In closing, Chairperson Youssouf thanked Germany for its unwavering support for humanitarian efforts in Sudan and for its assistance to countries generously hosting refugees throughout the region, solidifying the importance of this bilateral relationship.
