Manchester UK – Despite strong interest from Serie A side AS Roma, Manchester United forward Joshua Zirkzee has reportedly committed to remaining at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season, vowing to fight for his position in Ruben Amorim’s squad.

The Dutch international, who has a contract with the Red Devils until 2029, has been the subject of a loan enquiry from Roma, which included an option-to-buy clause.

However, sources close to the player indicate Zirkzee is determined to stay and prove his worth.

AFCON Crisis Looms

Zirkzee’s decision comes at a critical time for United’s attacking unit. Manager Ruben Amorim is already dealing with a shortage of options due to the recent injury to star forward Benjamin Sesko.

Adding to the pressure, United are set to lose two key attackers, Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo, to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which runs from December 21 to January 18.

This temporary depletion makes Zirkzee’s retention essential, despite a “fairly underwhelming” 18 months at the club, as noted by Sky Sports’ analysis. His recent impact, including a “smart equaliser” against Crystal Palace, has shown glimpses of the potential that led United to sign him.

The 24-year-old has featured in the last two games, making his third Premier League start of the season against West Ham.

With 345 minutes played and one goal, his contribution has been minimal, but his presence now seems necessary to ensure United maintain squad depth through the crucial festive and January period.

United’s hierarchy, while aware of Roma’s interest, is not actively looking to sell Zirkzee in the winter window, aligning with the player’s own desire to secure more minutes under Amorim.
