In a significant high-level engagement at the African Union (AU) headquarters, the leadership of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), led by President Chief Fortune Charumbira, held a fruitful meeting with H.E. João Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, marking a pivotal moment in continental diplomacy.

As President Lourenço concludes his successful tenure as the Chairperson of the African Union, passing the baton to Burundi, the PAP delegation expressed deep-seated gratitude for his unwavering support.

Under Lourenço’s leadership, the continental Parliament witnessed a period of renewed vigor and institutional strengthening.

Milestones and Legislative Progress
The delegation briefed President Lourenço on the major achievements of 2025, highlighting the Parliament’s enhanced oversight role. A key focus was the PAP’s active participation in AU Election Observation Missions and its vocal advocacy for justice and reparations.

President Lourenço specifically lauded the PAP for developing three groundbreaking continental Model Laws:

  • Labour Migration in Africa: Aimed at protecting migrant workers and harmonizing regional policies.
  • Gender Equality and Equity: Providing a legal blueprint for women’s empowerment across the continent.
  • Sustainable Soil Management: A historic framework to protect Africa’s arable land and bolster food security. A Lasting Commitment
Reaffirming his dedication to the African cause, President Lourenço pledged to remain a steadfast ally of the Pan-African Parliament. He emphasized that the harmonization of laws is essential for the full realization of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the broader goals of Agenda 2063.
As the AU transitions to its 2026 theme of water security and sanitation, the collaboration between the executive and legislative branches remains vital for a prosperous, integrated Africa.
