Human Trafficking Scandal: 1,000 Kenyans Lured into Russia-Ukraine War Under Job Guises
By Drone Ideal
Kenya is reeling from a massive human trafficking scandal following an explosive intelligence report presented to Parliament. On February 18, 2026, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah revealed that more than 1,000 Kenyans have been recruited into Russia’s war against Ukraine, far exceeding previous estimates of 200.
Deception and Clandestine Networks
The report, authored by the National Intelligence Service (NIS), details a “deeply disturbing” network involving rogue state officials, recruitment agencies, and diplomatic staff.
According to Ichung’wah, these syndicates targeted ex-military personnel, former police officers, and unemployed youth aged 20 to 50, promising high-paying skilled jobs like electricians, plumbers, and security guards.
Recruits were enticed with monthly salaries of up to $2,400 (approx. KSh 310,000) and sign-on bonuses. However, upon landing in Russia on tourist visas, they were allegedly forced to sign Russian-language contracts and sent to front-line combat after just three weeks of training.
The Cost of War
The human toll is mounting. The NIS report confirms:
- 89 Kenyans are currently on the front lines.
- 39 hospitalized due to war injuries.
- 28 missing in action.
- At least one confirmed death, though families suspect the number is higher.
Ichung’wah has specifically accused staff at the Russian Embassy in Nairobi of colluding with local agencies to facilitate visas for these “mercenaries.” He also warned that any Kenyan officials in the Moscow embassy found to be part of this pipeline would face severe consequences.
In response, the Russian Embassy in Nairobi issued a firm denial on February 19, calling the allegations “misleading propaganda.” Despite this, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi has signaled intent to confront Moscow directly and implement a ban on the conscription of Kenyan citizens.
