The clash between Vadim Nemkov and Renan Ferreira at the PFL vs. Bellator event was a masterclass in tactical execution versus raw power.
While Ferreira entered the cage as the 2023 PFL Heavyweight Champion with a massive reach advantage and a reputation for devastating first-round knockouts, he technically lost the fight because he was unable to solve the “Nemkov puzzle.”
Nemkov, the former Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion moving up in weight, utilized a superior technical blueprint that neutralized Ferreira’s height and striking distance through lateral movement and elite level-changing.
Technically, the fight was lost for Ferreira in the transitions. Nemkov refused to stay on the end of Ferreira’s long straight punches, instead opting to use “in-and-out” blitzes that left Ferreira swinging at air.
By the time Ferreira attempted to find his rhythm, Nemkov had already initiated a series of well-timed takedowns.
Ferreira’s technical deficiency on the ground was exposed; despite his size, he struggled with Nemkov’s top pressure and hip control. Nemkov’s background in Sambo allowed him to chain-wrestle, moving from a failed attempt directly into a successful trip, which effectively drained Ferreira’s gas tank and took away his “equalizer”—the knockout power.
Ultimately, the technical “loss” for Ferreira was a failure of distance management and grappling defense. He was forced to fight off his back, a position where a striker of his stature is least effective.
Nemkov’s ability to mix the martial arts—striking to set up the clinch, and using the clinch to secure the ground—created a pace that Ferreira could not match.
By the time the final bell rang, it was clear that Ferreira had been technically outclassed by a more versatile martial artist who exploited the gaps between Ferreira’s striking sequences and his defensive wrestling.
