Gweru College Employee Arrested in Harare for Posing as High-Ranking Soldier

By Tendai Keith Guvamombe

HARARE, Zimbabwe – In a startling case of impersonation and deception, a 42-year-old man from Waterfalls, Harare, has been apprehended after allegedly masquerading as a member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) to fleece desperate job seekers.

The suspect, identified as Hardlife Nyoni, was intercepted by authorities on Wednesday following a sting operation. Despite his convincing act, investigations revealed a starkly different reality: Nyoni is actually a general hand employed at Mkoba Teachers College in Gweru.

The Recruitment Scam

According to a statement released by the Zimbabwe National Army, Nyoni’s tour of duty was nothing more than a calculated fraud. He allegedly targeted individuals eager to join the military, misrepresenting himself as an influential officer with the power to facilitate recruitment.

The suspect reportedly demanded varying sums of money from his victims to grease the wheels of the enlistment process. The scheme began to unravel when one prospective recruit became suspicious after Nyoni demanded a US$100 bribe. Instead of paying, the victim alerted the Zimbabwe Military Police.

Incriminating Evidence Recovered

At the time of his arrest, Nyoni was found in possession of items used to bolster his fake persona. These included:

  • A pair of handcuffs, used to intimidate and authenticate his officer status.
  • Various academic certificates belonging to multiple individuals, suspected to be his previous or intended victims.

Legal Consequences

The ZNA has since handed Nyoni over to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) at Harare Central for further management. He is expected to face charges of impersonation and fraud.

Military officials have cautioned the public to remain vigilant, reminding citizens that recruitment into the ZNA is a transparent process conducted through official channels and never involves the payment of fees to individuals. This arrest serves as a stern warning to those attempting to tarnish the image of the uniformed forces for personal gain.
