Investigative Journalist Simba Sithole Released on Bail Amid Outcry Over Borrowdale Wetlands Expose

By A Correspondent

Harare-based investigative journalist Simba Sithole was released from police custody today after being granted bail by a Harare Magistrate. Sithole’s release follows a tense 48-hour detention that sparked widespread condemnation from local and international media fraternity groups.

The journalist was arrested earlier this week following a criminal nuisance and cyber-harassment complaint lodged by WestProp Holdings CEO Ken Sharpe. The charges were brought forward in response to Sithole’s recent investigative pieces, which exposed alleged land corruption and the controversial development of the ecologically sensitive Borrowdale Wetlands.

As part of his bail conditions, Sithole was ordered to pay a fixed sum, surrender his passport, and refrain from interfering with state witnesses.

Speaking outside the court, Sithole’s legal team dismissed the allegations as a coordinated attempt to suppress press freedom and halt ongoing scrutiny into Harare’s wetland allocations.

”Our client is being penalized for doing his job,” his lawyer stated. “This case is a classic example of using the legal system to silence public interest journalism, but we are confident the facts will vindicate him.”

Media advocacy groups, which had gathered outside the courthouse in solidarity, welcomed the release but reiterated calls for the immediate withdrawal of all charges. Environmental activists also echoed these sentiments, arguing that silencing journalists will only accelerate the destruction of Harare’s critical water catchment areas.

Despite the legal hurdle, sources close to the development indicate that regional media hubs are closely monitoring the case, viewing it as a litmus test for the safety of environmental journalists in Zimbabwe. WestProp Holdings has yet to issue an official statement regarding the mounting public backlash over the arrest. Sithole is expected back in court next month for the commencement of the trial.
