Harare Journalist Arrested After Exposing Borrowdale Wetlands Land Scandal

By Tendai Guvamombe

In a chilling development for press freedom in Zimbabwe, Harare-based journalist Simba Sithole was arrested yesterday following his explosive investigative exposé detailing high-level land corruption. The arrest comes in the wake of intense legal and corporate pressure allegedly mounted by prominent land developer and WestProp Holdings Chief Executive Officer, Ken Sharpe.

Sithole, a journalist known for unearthing accountability stories, recently published a series of detailed reports exposing the systematic degradation and controversial allocation of the Borrowdale Wetlands. The environmental ecosystem, which serves as a critical water catchment area for Harare, has been the center of a fierce battle between environmentalists and powerful real estate moguls.

Sithole’s investigation directly linked Sharpe’s sweeping commercial developments to the controversial acquisition of these protected wetlands. The reports alleged that state and municipal entities bypassed stringent environmental impact assessments to grant titles, effectively jeopardizing the city’s long-term water security for luxury real estate projects.

Following the publications, Sharpe reportedly initiated criminal defamation and nuisance charges against the journalist, culminating in a swift police raid at Sithole’s residence. Media rights groups have fiercely condemned the arrest, viewing it as a textbook case of a “Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation” (SLAPP), designed to silence investigative journalism and shield powerful elites from public scrutiny.

”This is a blatant attempt to criminalize journalism and protect commercial interests at the expense of our environment,” said a representative from a local media defense network. “Sithole was merely executing his duty as the fourth estate.”

Despite growing international and local condemnation over the weaponization of the legal system against the press, police officials maintained that the arrest followed standard legal procedures regarding cyber-security and criminal nuisance complaints. As Sithole remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing, the regional media fraternity has rallied behind him, demanding an immediate cessation of harassment against journalists exposing corruption in Zimbabwe.
