In a Memorandum of Understanding signed last Friday between ZimTrade and the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) in Harare, the two entities aim to create a new avenue focused on heightening the credibility of local products in international markets—a move that will immensely contribute to the national export trade.
These efforts will usher in the development of a strong business case that encompasses all aspects affecting the performance of Zimbabwean products in export markets.
Speaking soon after the signing ceremony, Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries CEO Sekai Kuvarika said the MoU is key to unlocking potential markets for Zimbabwean products across regional and international landscapes. She emphasized the importance of finding ways to enhance product quality and standards to boost export competitiveness.
“The signing of this MoU is important in meeting national objectives to build a competitive manufacturing sector that grows in both regional and international markets. This will make our products competitive in terms of reliability, standards, and quality by leveraging existing regional markets such as SADC and COMESA, thereby turning policies into practical results. Market access alone is not enough; we need market penetration.”
According to ZimTrade CEO Allan Majuru, the signing ceremony will be followed by a clear roadmap to identify policy needs and gaps so Zimbabwe can grow its export footprint on the international stage.
“We need to make sure we measure the actions we undertake. We will now be able to provide quarterly updates. Last year, our exports were valued at 9.5 billion, which means we were primarily exporting raw materials. We now have a structured strategy to grow our value-added exports. We must ensure we produce quality products so we can compete effectively. Our exports need to reach wider across Africa, ensuring we tap into our heritage,” he said.
