PAP President Champions Southern Caucus Unity

Midrand, South Africa – On the sidelines of the ongoing 5th Ordinary Session of the Sixth Pan-African Parliament (PAP) in Midrand, the Southern Region Caucus, primarily composed of Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries, held a crucial meeting to solidify regional cooperation and strategy.

The gathering saw the adoption of key resolutions aimed at fostering unity and collective action.PAP President, Senator Chief Fortune Zephaniah Charumbira, a distinguished member of the Southern Caucus, underscored the paramount importance of unity and harmony within the region.

“As the Southern Region Caucus, we don’t need to give room for unnecessary divisions. We should be bound by the same unity of working together as one,” emphasized Chief Charumbira, who currently presides over the Pan-African Parliament.

His call for cohesion resonates deeply as the continent grapples with various socio-economic and political challenges.

Further solidifying the spirit of collective action, Hon. Pupurai Togarepi advocated for upholding consensus in all communications directed to the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament and the African Union.

He stressed that “All communications directed to the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament and African Union reflect collective views of Members of Pan-African Parliament in the Southern Region Caucus and this becomes binding to the Southern Region Caucus of the Pan African Parliament.”

This resolution aims to ensure a unified regional voice on continental matters.The meeting also marked the return of Mozambique to the position of Deputy Chairperson for the Southern Caucus, a move that reinforces regional leadership structures.

Additionally, new members were strategically aligned to various positions within the Permanent Committees of the Pan-African Parliament, ensuring robust representation and engagement across the institution’s critical functions.

The resolutions adopted reflect a concerted effort by the Southern Caucus to strengthen its influence and contribute effectively to the PAP’s mandate of promoting good governance, peace, and development across Africa.
