Journalist Gideon Madzikatidze Remanded in Custody Over Geo-Pomona Waste Management Expose

By Tendai Guvamombe (Freelance Correspondent)

In a troubling development for media freedom in Zimbabwe, Bulawayo24 journalist Gideon Madzikatidze was remanded in custody on Friday, 20 February 2026, following his arrest earlier this week. Madzikatidze appeared before Harare Magistrate Ruth Moyo, who ordered his continued detention until 23 February 2026, pending a formal bail ruling.

The journalist was initially arrested and detained at Harare Central Police Station on 18 February 2026. He faces charges of allegedly contravening critical sections of the Broadcasting Services Act alongside the widely contested Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

While the official state charges center on regulatory and criminal codification breaches, highly placed sources reveal that his sudden arrest is directly linked to an investigative report he authored regarding Geo-Pomona Waste Management. The company, based in Harare, operates the city’s primary waste-to-energy project under municipal partnership.

Media defense networks and regional press freedom advocates have strongly condemned the arrest of Gideon Madzikatidze.

”The use of criminal statutes to handle journalistic inquiries concerning public-interest contracts sets a dangerous precedent,” noted a local media representative outside the courthouse. “Journalists must be protected when probing entities managing public resources.”

As Madzikatidze prepares to return to court on Monday, local journalists and civil society organizations have rallied in solidarity, calling for the immediate dropping of charges and urging the government to safeguard the constitutional rights of the press.
