Social media has been set abuzz following the emergence of a highly controversial cartoon that has left many Zimbabweans and the global community in stitches, while others express deep concern.
The viral image, which is being shared widely on WhatsApp groups and X (formerly Twitter), depicts a simulated fistfight between former US President Donald Trump and the Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo.
What has particularly irked some observers while exciting others is the inclusion of several African heads of state in the background. President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, are seen watching the “bout” from the sidelines.
In the typical Zimbabwean satirical style, the cartoon portrays President Mnangagwa looking on with a calm, “soft as wool” demeanor, while Ramaphosa appears to be analyzing the situation with diplomatic caution.
The artwork comes at a time when global tensions are high, and the “fight” is seen as a symbol of the friction between secular populism and traditional moral values.
Critics of the image have decried the use of the Pope’s likeness in such a violent context, calling it a “sacrilegious” move that goes against our values and traditions. However, supporters of the artist argue that it is a “man for all seasons” type of critique, highlighting how world politics has become a spectator sport.
The cartoon has also sparked a debate on the role of Africa in global geopolitics. As the two giants “exchange blows,” the presence of African leaders as spectators suggests a continent that is still finding its voice while the West remains locked in internal ideological warfare.
