HARARE — In a brazen cyber security breach, cybercriminals have successfully compromised the personal WhatsApp account of prominent traditional leader and Pan-African figure, Chief Fortune Charumbira. The high-profile hijacking has already netted hackers upwards of $2,000 in illicit funds extracted directly from unsuspecting contacts within his private directory.
According to preliminary reports, the malicious actors gained unauthorized access to Chief Charumbira’s messaging application through advanced credential harvesting and social engineering tactics. Once inside, the threat actors locked the legitimate owner out of the platform and immediately pivoted to exploit his extensive network of professional associates, family members, and high-ranking officials.
Posing as the prominent chief, the hackers sent urgent, persuasive messages to individuals listed in his contacts directory. The fraudulent texts manipulated victims by manufacturing a crisis, claiming the traditional leader was stranded or facing an urgent financial emergency requiring immediate liquid assistance. Preying on the prestige and urgency associated with his standing, the cybercriminals successfully coerced multiple contacts into transferring funds.
Security analysts note that over $2,000 has been funneled into accounts controlled by the syndicate before the breach could be widely flagged and intercepted. Cybersecurity experts warn that compromised high-profile accounts are increasingly weaponized in targeted spear-phishing and social engineering attacks across the region.
Law enforcement and digital forensics units have been alerted and are currently working to trace the origins of the breach and dismantle the financial channels used by the perpetrators.
In the wake of this incident, digital security teams are issuing a stern warning to the public and political leadership alike. Officials are urging all contacts who interacted with Chief Charumbira’s compromised line during the window of the attack to immediately cease further financial transactions, block the number, and report suspicious activities to relevant authorities. Experts reiterate the critical importance of enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) across all messaging and communication platforms to thwart similar unauthorized takeover attempts
