By Pedro Mbewe Andras

HARARE – Thousands of people thronged Werraz Park in Glen View 1, Harare, to witness the provincial competition of the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival.

Groups from various districts across Harare showcased their cultural heritage, all vying for the chance to represent the province at the upcoming national competition scheduled for June.

Speaking to this publication, Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association (ZNTDA) President Mr. Kennedy Kachuruka said the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival is a collaboration between Delta Beverages, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, and ZNTDA. He emphasized that the festival brings together people from different cultures, allowing them to experience and appreciate each other’s traditions.

Mr. Kachuruka also acknowledged the consistent cooperation and support the festival receives each year. “Chibuku Neshamwari has been running since 1963. This year we are celebrating 63 years since its establishment. For us, it’s a milestone in promoting Zimbabwe’s cultures in all 16 languages — meaning every language has its culture worth celebrating,” he said.

Mufakose-based Shingai Dance Troupe, who performed Mbakumba, a dance with roots in Masvingo — emerged as this year’s winners. They will now represent Harare at the National Finals .

The group was in high spirits as their leader, Mr. Musa Lejala, Assistant Director, said they had worked hard in preparation. “This is our 6th time winning this competition, so for us it’s a challenge. Everyone wants to compete with the winners, so a lot of energy is needed,” he said. He also commended the organizers for promoting culture in Zimbabwe and promised the province victory at the National Finals.

Pasichigare Dance Troupe, who performed Muchongoyo — a dance originating from the Ndau people — finished second. The group expressed excitement at their placement and pledged to return stronger and better prepared next year. They also wished the winners the best at the national competition.
